YOUR board assessment RESULTS:

You and your board are doing great!

Congratulations! As an executive director, you spend a significant part of your time managing your board, and we understand that it is not an easy job. All your hard work is paying off though! You have a solid foundation where your board understands their roles and responsibilities and are active participants in the organization. At this stage, you have to focus on creating a solid plan for onboarding and transitioning so new members can easily adapt to the organizational culture and start working right away on supporting you.

SOME OF THE STEPS WE RECOMMEND you take INCLUDE:

  • Promote Transparency. The organization's annual budget should be fully discussed and understood by the board prior to approving it. The fiscal health of our organization is regularly reviewed, and necessary board actions are taken thoughtfully and swiftly. At this stage, your board is aware of their legal responsibilities for the organization's fiscal management and helps you stay in compliance.

  • Review policies and procedures. Make sure the board revisits its role as the organization's policy-making body at least every two years to ensure it is meeting this responsibility and has not drifted off-course.

  • Establish a transition and onboarding process. Make sure to create procedures that includes exit interviews, an annual board survey, and updated board orientation packets. Feedback from your board members will help you understand what is not working and how to better support your board members.

  • Assess your board. Make sure you go over our board checklist with your board once a year. Based on what is missing, identify areas of opportunities and weaknesses to help you create a plan for growth.
