YOUR board assessment RESULTS:

You are on the right track!

At this stage, you have an established board with clear roles and responsibilities. Remember that for an organization to be successful, the board needs to delegate to the organization's executive director sufficient authority to lead the staff and carry out the organization's mission. At this stage, you need to focus on designing a board engagement strategy that allows you to evaluate the effectiveness of the board and create a process to help you advance your goals.

SOME OF THE STEPS WE RECOMMEND you take INCLUDE:

  • Create Committees to streamline work processes and increase board effectiveness. Committees are a powerful tool to help your board be more efficient and accomplish more in support of the organization. Each committee needs to establish its goals and plans at the beginning of the fiscal year and then modify them as needed while reporting to the full board in a timely manner.

  • Make sure your board is fundraising for your organization. Fundraising is one of the main responsibilities of your board. Ensure your board understands the organization's fundraising needs and strategies and plays an active role in the organization's fundraising efforts. Make sure your board receives training and stays up to date on best practices in fundraising. This training can be part of your quarterly meetings or a separate customized training.

  • Establish a performance review process for the executive director and the board. The executive director's performance needs to be formally assessed at least annually based on objectives established at the beginning of the fiscal year. Make sure to include a review of the board projects at least once a year and create a clear plan to achieve those goals.
